Plate tectonics is a theory that came about in 1912 when a meteorologist by the name of Alfred Wegener would radically change the views of geologic theory at the time. On January 6th 1912 Alfred went to the geological association of Frankfurt and presented his theory that the continents were at one point joined as one land mass called Pangea. His theory was that these continents where spread apart by continental shift.
